NRECA, DOE Launch Rural Battery Storage Research Projects

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) this week launched four rural battery storage projects in partnership with five electric cooperatives and the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electricity. Projects are being funded in part by DOE and will examine how energy storage systems can improve the resilience of critical infrastructure in rural areas.

Coop to Test Emerging Battery Technology

Great River Energy recently announced it will test a novel “aqueous air battery system,” a 1 MW grid-connected battery with 150 MWh of continuous energy capability. If successful, the battery could provide a viable option for coops seeking to increase their share of renewable energy without sacrificing reliability.

North Carolina Cooperatives Invest $1 Million in Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

North Carolina’s electric cooperatives are investing $1 million to expand electric vehicle charging stations throughout the state. The cooperatives’ investment is being provided through North Carolina Electric Membership Corp., the state’s generation and transmission cooperative. The funding will be used to install 21 charging stations by the end of this year.

Alaska Coop Announces New Battery Energy Storage System

Cordova Electric Cooperative, an Alaskan electric cooperative, unveiled a new 500 kW battery energy storage system. Energy leaders and from Washington, D.C. and Alaska celebrated the new system with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 9, 2019.

Texas Cooperative to Install Battery Storage System

Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) has signed an agreement with Aggreko, a provider of mobile and modular power solutions, to install and commission a battery energy storage system in Johnson City, Texas. The system will provide solar shifting from a nearby solar farm within the PEC service territory.

FERC Decision Draws NRECA Commentary

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) issued a statement criticizing the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) refusal to reconsider rules on energy storage resources in wholesale markets. NRECA leadership noted that FERC’s assumption of discretionary authority may undermine local utilities’ and regulatory authorities’ management of storage resources for...

Midwest Electric Cooperatives Launch Battery Storage Project

In an effort to learn if the use of smart batteries can reduce peak electricity demand, or provide other benefits, four Midwestern electric cooperatives are experimenting with storage technology by installing smart batteries in some members’ homes. MiEnergy Cooperative, Richland Electric Cooperative, Oakdale Electric Cooperative and Jo-Carroll Energy pooled resources and knowledge to...

Iowa Coop Installing Batteries in Homes

MiEnergy Cooperative has started installing smart battery storage systems in the homes of its members as a way to test batteries as a tool for energy management. MiEnergy is one of four cooperatives that have commissioned a battery storage system as part of a pilot program sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Colorado Utility Company Will Install Large Battery Storage Project

Xcel Energy-Colorado, the state’s largest electric utility, will add 275 MW of battery storage by 2022. The move highlights the potential that improved electric storage technology holds for electric utilities across a variety of generation resources.

Energy Storage Systems Added to Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation’s Service Territory

Lockheed Martin and Cypress Creek Renewables have commissioned 12 MWh of GridStar Lithium energy storage systems for 12 solar-plus-storage projects that will provide clean electricity to communities served by Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation, a North Carolina cooperative (“Brunswick EMC”). Lockheed Martin’s GridStar technology ensures that this electricity is rapidly...
