Delaware State Senate Passes Bill Allowing Delaware Electric Cooperative to Reject Large Load Requests
The Delaware State Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 276, which would allow the Delaware Electric Cooperative to reject requests from new large load consumers with a load of 50 megawatts or more seeking to connect to its grid. Delaware Electric Cooperative asked lawmakers to pass the bill in order to protect existing customers from significant rate increases. Under Senate Bill 276, large loads, such as data centers, would be required to generate their own power or contract with a third-party supplier. The legislation now moves to the House of Representatives, while Delaware’s largest utility, Delmarva Power, has not sought a similar exemption, stating it believes such decisions should be handled through regulatory oversight rather than legislative action.
