Louisiana Cooperatives to Receive Nearly 30 Million in Disaster Aid

Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) recently announced 28.7 million in FEMA grants will be awarded to Jefferson Davis Electric Cooperative and Beauregard Electrical Cooperative. The coops will use the funds to repair damage from Hurricanes Laura and Delta.

Jefferson Davis Electric Cooperative Spends Big on Storm Resilience

Jefferson Davis Electric Cooperative (JDEC), one of the largest cooperatives in the state of Louisiana, is taking the lessons from Hurricane Laura, which wreaked havoc on the state’s electricity grid in 2020, to heart. JDEC is spending $340 million dollars to weatherproof its systems through measures like replacing wooden transmission poles with steel and elevating substations.

Louisiana Regulator Approves Cooperative Power Deals

A Louisiana regulator approved two power procurement deals sought by Dixie Electric Membership Cooperative and Jefferson Davis Electric Cooperative to acquire power from NextEra. The move came despite objections by Louisiana’s electric monopolies. According to Public Service Commissioner Craig Greene, the deals could save cooperatives $160 million over the next decade.
