Big Rivers Electric Coop Joins Midwest ISO

Midwest ISO has announced a successful integration with Big Rivers Electric Cooperative, a Kentucky-based G&T.  According to the press release, Big Rivers brings a 1,262-mile transmission system and 1,756 MW of generating capacity to the Midwest markets.  Midwest ISO’s total market generation is now 145,000 MW, with a 57,453-mile transmission system.

South Dakota Electric Cooperatives Receive Millions from FEMA for Underground Power Lines

Last year, severe winter storms left thousands of South Dakotans without electricity.  American News now reports that South Dakota cooperatives will receive more than $27.5 million from FEMA to install underground lines.  These lines will replace overhead lines that were particularly vulnerable to winter storms.

East Kentucky Power Cooperative Drops Plans for Coal-Fired Plant

In a settlement with opponents, East Kentucky Power Cooperative has dropped plans to build a coal-fired power plant in Clark County, Kentucky.  East Kentucky cited decreased demand for electricity caused by the economic downturn.
