Solar Development Transforming Rural Energy Landscape

NRECA Joins Groups Advocating Continuation of MATS

Cobb EMC Expands Solar Portfolio

Cobb Electric Membership Corporation (“Cobb EMC”) recently announced that it has entered into a 30-year power purchase agreement with Green Power EMC. This agreement, along with other solar initiatives, has increased Cobb EMC’s solar portfolio by 360 percent since 2016. The project, which is scheduled to begin construction in 2018, is under development by Silicon Ranch Corporation and is expected to begin commercial operations in 2021.

Colorado Coop Approves Solar PPA

Intermountain Rural Electric Association (IREA) has voted to enter into a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with GCL New Energy, which will develop an 80 MW, utility-scale solar project. The project will help ensure that IREA meets the renewable energy standard mandated by Colorado law.

NRECA Indicates Concern With Senate Farm Bill

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative has announced the completion of Wildcat Point Generation Facility, a 1,000 MW combined-cycle natural gas power plant. The energy facility produces enough electricity to power approximately 390,000 homes.

Arkansas Coop to Purchase Additional Wind-Generated Energy

Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation (AECC) has entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement with Wildhorse Wind Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of Southern Power. Pursuant to the power purchase agreement, AECC will purchase wind-generated energy from a 100 MW wind project, which is expected to reach commercial operation by the end of 2019.

NextEra Energy, Inc. announced on May 21, 2018 that it has entered into definitive agreements with Southern Company to acquire Gulf Power, Florida City Gas and its ownership interests in the Oleander and Stanton natural-gas generating plants located in Florida. Florida PSC Approves Two Plants to Serve Coop Customers

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved the development of two new natural gas plants to serve coop customers. The PSC approved a 1,122 MW plant in Putnam County proposed by Seminole Electric Cooperative, which is scheduled to be in service by December 2022. The PSC also approved a 573 MW power plant in Pasco County proposed by Seminole Electric and Shady Hills Energy Center, which is scheduled to be in service by December 2021.

Dairyland Power Cooperative (Dairyland) announced plans for three new solar power garden installations to begin construction later this year. Dairyland signed power purchase agreements with SoCore Energy of Chicago to build the solar gardens, which will be located in Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois.
