Hawaii Coop Buys 1.5-MW Battery Storage System

Business Wire has details on a contract between Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative and Xtreme Power Inc. to purchase a 1.5-MW utility-scale battery storage system.  The system will support a 3-MW solar project.

Texas Cooperative Involved in 1.67-MW Wind Turbine Project

South Plains Electric Cooperative will receive new energy from a 1.67-MW turbine project in Texas.  The turbine was recently completed by Spain’s Alstom Power.  Additional details are here.

NRECA Asks Obama Administration for More Clean Renewable Energy Bonds

Bond Buyer reports that NRECA, along with two other industry groups, is pushing the Obama administration for more clean renewable energy bonds (CREB) (subscription required).  The current CREB program is out of funding.

South Carolina Legislator Introduces Bill to Require “Special Needs Account Customer” Form

A South Carolina legislator has introduced a bill to further protect special needs account customers.  The bill requires that coops and other utilities include a form in their customers’ bills (at least once a year) that would notify the utilities of their customers’ special needs status.  Full text of the bill is here.

Coop Customers in the Mid-Atlantic Get Energy-Saving Website

Twelve electric coops in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia (including G&T Old Dominion) have launched a new website to help their customers save energy.  The website, which provides energy saving tips and daily use calculations, is located at http://www.energizeefficiently.coop/ . The Weekly Observer (South Carolina) has a report on the origins of the lawsuit against Santee Electric Cooperative, including the role of an IRS form made available on the internet.  The lawsuit against Santee by its members involves allegations of corporate mismanagement and a failure to return capital credits.

New Electric Coop Forming in Alaska

The new electric coop will be called the Alaska Railbelt Cooperative Transmission and Energy Company.  It is a combination of five utilities:  Chugach, Matanuska, Homer, Seward, and Golden Valley electric associations.  Additional details are here.
