Large USDA Loan Awarded to North Dakota Electric Coop

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a $46 million loan to Central Power Electric Cooperative (CPEC).  The loan will help finance over 50 miles of new power lines and several substations.  CPEC serves over 50,000 customers in 25 North Dakota counties.  Please click here for more information.

Oklahoma Coop Brings in More Solar Energy

Tri-County Electric Cooperative (Tri-County) has reached an agreement with Arkansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc. (AEC) by which AEC will supply Tri-County with a one-megawatt solar array.  Tri-County members who participate in its new community solar program will be able to purchase electricity generated by the solar array.  Click here to read more.

NRECA Publishes Negative Impact of EPA’s Plan

The National Rural Electric Cooperative (NRECA) created a webpage whereby it shows the nationwide coal plant closures and harmful economic impact that will result from the EPA’s Clean Power Plan (Plan), disproportionately affecting rural coop consumer members.  Read more about NRECA’s opposition to the Plan here.

Bonneville Power Administration’s Rate Increase to Hit Coops

Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) recently announced that it will raise its wholesale power rates by 7.1 percent and its transmission rates by 4.4 percent, effective October 1.  BPA, a federal agency and the largest wholesale provider in the northwestern United States, supplies wholesale power to 54 electric cooperatives.  Click here for more.

USDA Announces Funding for Rural Electric Infrastructure Projects

The Secretary of Agriculture announced today that $349 million in funding would be provided for 15 rural electric infrastructure projects.  The projects will build or improve almost 2,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines for rural electric cooperatives and utilities in 13 states.  Click here for more information.

Department of Energy Urged to Expand Renewable Energy Grant Programs

Representatives from Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands have urged the Department of Energy to expand grant programs to help reduce the relatively high capital costs of renewable energy installation projects facing operators of islanded, non-grid-connected communities and to make the projects economically feasible. Green Power EMC Increases its Solar Portfolio

Green Power EMC announced Wednesday that it will buy the full output of a 52-MW solar farm in southeast Georgia for 30 years.  The solar farm is owned by Silicon Ranch Corp., which has previously leased the output of another of its solar facilities to Green Power.  Partnerships like these have allowed Green Power EMC to supply renewable energy to 38 other Georgia EMCs.  Click here to...

Texas Coop Breaks Ground on New Hydroelectric Plant

The East Texas Electric Cooperative and Trinity River Authority of Texas recently broke ground on a new hydroelectric project. The Thomas Hydroelectric Project is located at Lake Livingston Dam and is expected to become operational in 2018.  Once online the new hydroelectric power plant will produce enough electricity to power 12,000 homes in East Texas.  Click here to read...

G&T Cooperatives Join DOE Grid Study

The Department of Energy (DOE) has invited two generation and transmission cooperatives, Great River Energy and Hoosier Energy, to join 15 other electric utilities in the Partnership for Energy Sector Climate Resilience to help strengthen the grid against extreme weather and impacts from climate change.  Read more about the Partnership’s goals here.

USDA Announces $100 million in Loans for Rural Electric Coop Utilities

Today the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced $106.3 million in electric system infrastructure loans to rural electric cooperative utilities in four states.  The loans include $9 million for smart grid improvements.  The announcement comes during the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Rural Electrification Administration.  Click here for more...
