Former Director Of Georgia Coop Now Serving in State General Assembly

No Climate Change Tax Break for South Dakota Coops

Due to the structure of South Dakota’s tax system, coops are concerned that they will be taxed on the costs of the upgrades that may be required by climate change laws.  South Dakota legislators voted against a measure that would have provided for an exemption for such upgrades.  Aberdeen News has the full story.

Georgia Legislature Proposes Law That Would Require Open Board Meetings

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a bill was introduced to the Georgia House of Representatives that would require cooperatives to open their board meetings to the public.  Two of the bill’s sponsors represent counties served by Cobb EMC, the coop whose CEO was recently indicted on racketeering and theft charges.

Another Virginia Legislator Introduces Bill on Pole Attachments

Full text of the bill is available here.  Among other provisions, the bill provides that unauthorized attachments to utility poles owned by electric cooperatives are a Class 1 misdemeanor and requires that cable television systems adhere to certain conditions and standards.

Virginia Legislator: Let Telecoms and Cable Companies Petition Commission to Establish Contract Terms with Coops in Absence of Agreement Over Poles

A Virginia legislator has introduced a bill that would permit telecoms and cable companies to petition a state commission to establish contract terms if they are unable to arrive at a mutually agreeable contract with electric cooperatives for pole attachments.  Full text of the bill is here.
