Kansas G&T Gets Approval for 895-MW Coal-Fired Power Plant

The Kansas City Star reports that, after a four-year effort, Sunflower Electric Power Corporation has received state permission to build an 895-MW, coal-fired power plant (link currently unavailable).  The plant’s cost is estimated at $2.2 billion to nearly $3 billion.

Spotlight on Novi Energy LLC

Crain’s Detroit Business has an article on Novi Energy LLC, an energy consulting and alternative-energy facility development company.  Among other projects, Novi is working with Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative on a 49.95-MW biomass plant, which runs on “slash” (i.e., discarded and burned tree parts).

Williamsburg Lawmakers to Monitor Coop’s Coal Plant

Lawmakers in Williamsburg, Virginia, have informed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that they will monitor a proposed coal-fired plant that is being developed by Old Dominion Electric Cooperative.  The lawmakers cite potential impacts on pollution and tourism.  Old Dominion had previously announced an 18-24 month delay on the $6 billion project.

Calpine Sells 25 Percent Interest in Gas Plant to Rayburn Country Electric Cooperative

Rayburn Country Electric Cooperative has purchased a 25 percent stake in the 1,038-MW Freestone Energy Center near Fairfield, Texas.  The price is $215 million.  Calpine will remain majority owner of the combined-cycle, natural gas-fired plant.

North Dakota G&T Coop to Receive Over $500 Million in RUS Loan Guarantees; Georgia’s Oglethorpe to Receive $373 Million

Basin Electric Power Cooperative, a G&T based in North Dakota, will receive more than $500 million of the $2.9 billion in federal loan guarantees from Rural Utilities Service(RUS) (subscription required).  Nearly $405 million is slotted for a 300-MW natural gas-fired power plant.  The rest is slotted for two wind projects that will generate 120 MW. Berkshire Wind Project Nearing Completion

The Republican reports that the Berkshire wind project is nearing completion. The project has ten turbines, each 1.5 MW. The Berkshire Wind Power Cooperative Corporation is made up of Massachusetts municipal utilities and the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company.

East Texas Coop Applies for RUS Loan for Biomass Plant

East Texas Electric Cooperative, a group of ten East Texas cooperatives, has applied to the RUS for a $145 million loan to build a biomass plant in Woodville, Texas.  The plant is scheduled to operate in late 2013 / early 2014 and will produce roughly 50 MW of power.

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative Moving Forward on Green Power Plant

A Virginia state commission has given the go-ahead to preliminary construction of a green power plant at a former Georgia-Pacific facility in Halifax County.  The plant will convert wood waste product into energy.  Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative is partnering with NOVI Energy on the project.

East Kentucky Power Cooperative Drops Plans for Coal-Fired Plant

In a settlement with opponents, East Kentucky Power Cooperative has dropped plans to build a coal-fired power plant in Clark County, Kentucky.  East Kentucky cited decreased demand for electricity caused by the economic downturn.

Georgia EMCs Agree to Purchase Power from Biomass Plant

A group of seven Georgia EMCs have recently agreed to a 10-year power purchase agreement from a biomass power plant in Thomaston, Georgia.  The plant, a wood-fueled generation facility, will begin operations in early 2012 and power nearly 10,000 homes.
