Coops Join North Dakota in Coal Suit

The state of North Dakota and certain power industry participants, including Basin Electric Power Cooperative and Minnkota Power Cooperative, Inc., filed suit against the state of Minnesota. The plaintiffs contend that a Minnesota law restricting the importation of coal-generated power violates the U.S. Constitution and will result in higher electricity prices for Minnesota consumers....

Trade Groups Oppose Pole Regulation Effort

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and other trade groups have made a filing with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in support of a U.S. District Court’s holding that utility poles are not a “point source” under the Clean Water Act and, therefore, do not fall under its permitting requirements. New York Legislation Opens New Service Areas to Coops

Under the new law, the definition of “rural” has been changed to cover towns with up to 20,000 residents.  Prior to this change, the limit in New York was 1,000 residents.  Electric Co-op Today has the full story.

Proposed Legislation Would Exempt Coops from EPA Rules Applicable to Stationary Engines

U.S. Rep. Lewes Resolution Says No to Coop

The Lewes Board of Public Works determined it is not in the public’s interest to sell the city’s electric utility to Delaware Electric Cooperative.  Local control, reliable service and good rate treatment already provided by the city’s utility were among the reasons residents supported the Board’s resolution.  Click here for more.

Digger Derrick Settlement Reached

Last month, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and certain electric utilities, including coops, reached a settlement agreement on new OSHA rules for digger derricks used in electric construction. Many of the OSHA rules will still apply to electric utilities. The effective date for compliance is scheduled for November 2014. Click here for the full story.
