Basin Electric Power Cooperative’s 162 MW Wind Farm is the Largest in South Dakota

The Daily Republic reports that once all 100 turbines are operational, Basin Electric will exceed its goal of generating at least 10 percent of its power from renewable sources.  Construction of the $363 million dollar PraireWinds SD 1 project began last year and all turbines should be online by the middle of February.

Southern Company and Ted Turner Team Up to Provide Solar Energy to Electric Cooperatives

EnergyCentral has a report on the 30-MW Cimarron Solar Facility, the product of a partnership between Southern Company and Ted Turner, which is located in New Mexico. The facility will supply power to the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association’s member cooperatives.

Callaway Electric Cooperative Passes Resolution in Support of Second Nuclear Reactor

Business Wire has details on a contract between Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative and Xtreme Power Inc. to purchase a 1.5-MW utility-scale battery storage system.  The system will support a 3-MW solar project.

Texas Cooperative Involved in 1.67-MW Wind Turbine Project

South Plains Electric Cooperative will receive new energy from a 1.67-MW turbine project in Texas.  The turbine was recently completed by Spain’s Alstom Power.  Additional details are here.

Washington State’s 2020 Mandate for Alternative Energy in Question

Crosscut (Seattle) reports on the difficulties in meeting Washington State’s mandate that 15 percent of its electricity come from alternative sources by 2020.  Among other industry groups, Washington Rural Electric Cooperative Association had originally opposed the mandate.

The Cape Cod Times reports that the Cape & Vineyard Electric Cooperative (formed in 2007) is seeking to end a regional commission’s jurisdiction over wind turbines.  The coop has yet  build a single turbine amid concerns over the region’s historic character.

Iowa Nuclear Power Plant Gets 20 More Years

The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa’s only nuclear power plant received a 20-year extension in its operating license.  Two Iowa cooperatives, Central Iowa Power Cooperative and Corn Belt Power Cooperative, have ownership interests in the plant.  The majority owner is NextEra Energy Resources.
