The Great Falls Tribune reports on a bitter controversy between Southern Montana Electric Generation and Transmission Cooperative, Inc. and NorthWestern Energy, Montana’s dominant electric utility.  The dispute is over the provision of new meters to commercial energy customers.

South Carolina Legislator Introduces Bill to Require “Special Needs Account Customer” Form

A South Carolina legislator has introduced a bill to further protect special needs account customers.  The bill requires that coops and other utilities include a form in their customers’ bills (at least once a year) that would notify the utilities of their customers’ special needs status.  Full text of the bill is here.

Kit Carson Electric Cooperative Seeks to Invalidate Most Rate Protests

The Taos News reports on efforts by Kit Carson Electric Cooperative to invalidate all but 12 protests against a proposed $4.3 million rate hike.  A formal review of the rate increase by the New Mexico commission requires at least 25 valid protests.

Maryland Commission OKs Rate Hike for Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative

Southern Maryland Newspapers has details on a $19.4 million rate hike by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative.

Protests Against Kit Carson Electric Cooperative’s Rate Hike

Roughly 170 protests were filed with a New Mexico commission over proposed rate hikes by Kit Carson Electric Cooperative.  The Taos News reports that the protests are not limited to the rate hike and include concerns over corporate mismanagement.  It is expected that the commission will hold hearings on the proposed rate hike.

FERC: Montana Coop Does Not Have to Pay Transmission Charges from NorthWestern Corporation

FERC has sided with Southern Montana Electric Generation & Transmission Cooperative in a dispute with NorthWestern Corp.  The cooperative had complained that NorthWestern was improperly billing it for “long-term, firm point-to-point transmission service” in the absence of a valid service agreement.
