In 2009, Santee Cooper’s biggest customer, Central Electric Power Cooperative, announced plans to shift 1,000 MW of its load to Duke Energy beginning in 2013.  The Post & Courier reports that Santee Cooper is now seeking to cut the utility’s interest in two new nuclear reactors.

Cape & Vineyard Electric Cooperative Seeks to End Regional Commission Oversight Over Wind Turbines

The Cape Cod Times reports that the Cape & Vineyard Electric Cooperative (formed in 2007) is seeking to end a regional commission’s jurisdiction over wind turbines.  The coop has yet  build a single turbine amid concerns over the region’s historic character.

Iowa Nuclear Power Plant Gets 20 More Years

The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa’s only nuclear power plant received a 20-year extension in its operating license.  Two Iowa cooperatives, Central Iowa Power Cooperative and Corn Belt Power Cooperative, have ownership interests in the plant.  The majority owner is NextEra Energy Resources.

Basin Electric Power Cooperative to Delay Carbon Capture Project

Citing economic concerns, Basin Electric Power Cooperative, a North Dakota G&T, has announced it will hold off on a carbon capture project at a coal-fired plant in central North Dakota.

Cooperatives to Push for Clean Renewable Energy Bonds Program

Platts reports that municipal and cooperative utility associations (including the NRECA) will lobby next year for the Clean Renewable Energy Bonds program, which provides tax credit bonds for low-carbon renewable energy projects.  The program was not extended in the recent tax legislation that Congress passed last Thursday.

Former Louisiana Coop Members to Receive Capital Credit Checks

Following the merger between Southwestern Electric Power Company and Valley Electric Membership Coop (VEMCO), nearly 5,000 former VEMCO members will receive capital credit checks, ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars.  The Shreveport Times has the details.

Kansas G&T Gets Approval for 895-MW Coal-Fired Power Plant

The Kansas City Star reports that, after a four-year effort, Sunflower Electric Power Corporation has received state permission to build an 895-MW, coal-fired power plant (link currently unavailable).  The plant’s cost is estimated at $2.2 billion to nearly $3 billion.

Old Dominion Electric Cooperative to Buy Credits From Landfill Plant

The Virginia cooperative has announced plans to purchase all the credits to power and energy from a landfill gas-to-energy generation plant (6.4 MW) in Richmond.
